The Humpty Dumpty daycare center in Berlin’s Schöneberg neighborhood is a small, parent-run kindergarden with a focus on bilingual education. The kindergarden is located in generously sized premises with two large rooms, two smaller rooms and a small garden at the front. There are currently around 20 children between the ages of 18 months and 5 years. The team of caregivers typically consists of four or five caregivers, two of them native German speakers and the other two native English speakers. We follow the immersion approach to bilingual education, with the teachers generally speaking their native language with the children.
Humpty Dumpty sees itself as a community of parents and teachers working together to raise the children. As a result, parents are expected to take an active role in the day-to-day running of the kindergarten, which includes committing themselves to certain duties. On the other hand, parents also enjoy greater opportunities than in other public daycare centres to be involved in decision-making and have a say in the direction and activities of the kindergarten.
